The Art of Connection: A Journey with Mindfulness and Horses

Mindfulness has been a game-changer for me. Staying present and intentional can prevent mishaps, while carelessness often leads to trouble—or worse.

Years ago, I studied mindfulness with a Buddhist instructor. One evening, our group was tasked with building the fire and heating the stones for a sweat lodge. The instructor emphasized that building the fire with intention was critical—it would affect the lodge’s energy and the prayers within.

At one point, I carelessly tossed a stick into the fire. A sharp voice came from behind me: “Do it again.”

Working with horses mindfully can transform your experience.

Startled, I turned around. “Huh?”

“Do it again,” the instructor repeated firmly. “Start over. Every stick, every stone must be placed with care and reverence.”

Chastened, I began anew, paying attention to each movement.

So, what does this have to do with horses?

Working with horses mindfully can transform your experience. It deepens your connection, prevents injuries, and even shifts your horse’s behavior. Horses respond to your awareness—they feel it when you’re truly present.

Recently, I took a course with equine expert Lockie Phillips. In one video, Lockie demonstrated incredible care during a trail ride with his horse. From inviting the horse out of its turnout to sharing enrichment time together after the ride, every step was filled with intention, consent, and consideration.

The results were mind-blowing, like witnessing a beautiful dance.

Even the simplest tasks—like brushing your horse—can become profound acts of connection when done with presence. What might feel like a mundane chore could turn into a dance of joy. And your horse? They might just thank you for it.

Mindfulness isn’t just a tool; it’s a way to honor the bond we share with our equine partners as well as the world around us. 💕
