Whispers from the Herd: Chance, the Appaloosa

“Freedom doesn’t mean wildness. It means presence.

It means honoring what’s real. A soft halter. A walk without an agenda. Saying “yes” when he wants to move. Saying “thank you” when he chooses to stay. ” - Chaela Sumner

Whispers from the Herd: Chance, the Appaloosa

Meet Chance

He’s 27, sway-backed, speckled with time, and absolutely done with being underestimated.

He gave his best years to his humans—trail rides, lessons, pony rides, the quiet comfort of his presence. He carried first loves, first falls, and first canters. He was steady when the world wasn’t.

Now? He just wants one thing: respect.

Not pity. Not pats on the head.

Respect.

Chance the horse wants respect

His human still comes. She still brushes him, checks his feet, fills the water. But she’s always halfway somewhere else.
Phone buzzing. Mind racing.
He watches her, waiting.
Waiting for her to see him. To arrive.

Today I pulled a card for Chance from the Art of Sacred Connection Equine Oracle.

Freedom: Letting go of control

FREEDOM
“If you let go of control, you open the door to connection.”

And it hit me.

We humans cling so tightly—to routines, outcomes, expectations. But horses like Chance? They already know the truth.

Freedom doesn’t mean wildness. It means presence.
It means honoring what’s real. A soft halter. A walk without agenda. Saying “yes” when he wants to move. Saying “thank you” when he chooses to stay.

Chance has earned that space.

We all have.

What would freedom look like for your horse?

What would it look like for you?
